My name is Stephanie Hsu, a fine arts student currently attending Ross Sheppard High School. The purpose of this project was to creatively show my representation of the theme, Fire.

The medium of watercolour and acrylic paint was used for this particular project. These mediums were found effective because the watercolour is able to give off a soft, vibrant feeling while the acrylic paint is bolder. The symbol was cut out of the middle because it is able to give the piece more dimensions. The purpose of outlining the two symbols on the side was to present contrast (having an empty space on a busy background).

The inspiration of this piece comes from the painting Kanji: Flower by Mark E. Mehaffey. I feel that this project is very meaningful in many ways because not only does it represent my Chinese culture, it also allows others to express their own interpretation of the symbols, for example, some may say that the three symbols of fire look like three running candles.

I learned from this assignment, that there is never any harm in being spontaneous and trying new things. By experimenting new techniques, I have acquired new skills that can be used in future projects. I also learned that being precise all the time is not necessarily a good thing when it comes to art, letting loose (a skill I am struggling with but still working towards) can being out the inner artist in everyone.
