News: Designated Professional Accountant Wanted for Board’s Audit Committee

The Audit Committee consists of the Board of Trustees and two external members. Trustees are seeking one external designated professional accountant to serve as a volunteer on the Committee for the next four years (term expires October 2018). 

This opportunity will provide valuable experience in the financial oversight of the second largest school District in Alberta serving over 83,000 students with a budget of over $1 billion. The first Audit Committee meeting for the new external member will take place November 2014 at the Centre for Education, One Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.

QUALIFICATIONS/BACKGROUND

The following qualifications will be beneficial to your role as an Audit Committee member:

  • designated professional accountant
  • experience with leadership and advisory roles
  • experience and knowledge with audit standards, governance, and managing complex systems
  • detailed knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Committee will meet at minimum, two times a year, to:

  • recommend the appointment of an external auditor
  • meet with the external auditor prior to the annual audit to review the audit plan and engagement letter
  • review the audited financial statements and audit findings
  • review the external auditor’s assessment of the system of internal control and accounting policies, the draft annual audit report, the audit findings and the draft management letter.
