English as a Second Language (ESL)

Program Description

English as a Second Language (ESL) supports students who are learning English. These students speak a first language or additional languages other than English and need to develop their English language skills to be successful in the classroom.   

Goals

  • Develop English language and literacy skills
  • Develop an understanding of Canadian culture and customs

Program delivery

  • Flexible instruction that meets students’ needs, abilities and goals
  • Practice speaking in English with other students  
  • Gradual integration into a regular classroom as language skills progress and improve
  • Partnerships with community organizations to provide services for newcomer students and their families

Eligibility

To be eligible for this programming, students must be:

  • Learning English as a second language
  • Identified as requiring additional support in developing English language skills

Alberta curriculum

All Edmonton Public Schools programming is based on curriculum determined by Alberta Education. Students enrolled in English as a Second Language will receive the same high-quality education offered in all of our programs.

Transportation

Yellow busing is not available for students in ESL programming. For more information about busing, contact your child’s designated school or call Student Transportation at 780-429-8585.
