District Awards


Each year, we proudly recognize and celebrate the diversity of excellence and success for Grade 12 students across the District. Learn about the Michael Strembitsky Award of Excellence and six additional award categories representing broad curricular themes, attributes of citizenship and overall commitment to learning. District high schools may recognize one student for each award category.


2016-2017 MICHAEL A. STREMBITSKY AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Nominations for the 2017 Michael A. Strembitsky Award of Excellence are now being accepted.

DESCRIPTION

This award honours the District’s longest-serving superintendent, Michael A. Strembitsky. It is given to the top three Grade 12 students who model inclusivity, leadership and compassion and have demonstrated excellence in their overall performance. High schools are encouraged to nominate the most deserving student from their school.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The submission deadline is 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE

Nominees will participate in a group interview during the day on Wednesday, April 26. A selection committee will adjudicate nominees on the basis of the criteria and recommend the Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients. All nominees will be invited to, and acknowledged at, the June 20 Board meeting.

OTHER DISTRICT STUDENT AWARDS

The District Student Awards recognize and celebrate the diversity of excellence and success for Grade 12 students across the District. Six award categories (below) represent broad curricular themes, attributes of citizenship and overall commitment to learning. District high schools may recognize one student for each award category.  

ELIGIBILITY

To be considered for a District Student Award, students must:

  • be a Grade 12 student current enrolled at a District high school
  • have demonstrated strong academic achievement in the subject area of the award category (not necessarily the highest mark, but a mark that reflects high achievement)
  • have demonstrated character traits from each of the “3 E’s” (engaged learner, ethical citizen and entrepreneurial spirit) from the Ministerial Order on Student Learning
  • be willing to complete a District award application, which includes a short written statement, a recent photo and a signed consent for their name and photo to be used publicly (to acknowledge and celebrate their accomplishment, should they be the successful recipient of the award)

The submission deadline is 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE

  • Eligible students may be nominated by a teacher or personally apply.
  • Each high school will receive the list of applicants for their school.
  • Each high school is eligible to nominate one recipient for this award category.
  • Each high school will select their award recipient to be acknowledged by the District.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD 

The District Academic Excellence Award is open to Grade 12 students who demonstrate overall exceptional academic achievement in a range of subjects in International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement or Regular programming.

CAREER AND LIFE PATHWAYS AWARD

The District Career and Life Pathways Award is open to Grade 12 students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in one or more of the following areas: Business, Administration, Finance and Information Technology (BIT), Health, Recreation and Human Services (HRH), Media, Design and Communication Arts (MDC), Natural Resources (NAT), Trades, Manufacturing and Transportation (TMT), and Career Transitions (CTR).

FINE ARTS AWARD

The District Fine Arts Award is open to Grade 12 students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in one or more of the performing and visual arts, including subjects pertaining to music, art, dance and drama.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS AWARD

The District Health and Wellness Award is open to Grade 12 students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and/or model leadership in one or more of the following areas: Physical Education, School Athletics, Health and Life Skills and overall wellness, such as healthy life choices.
