ATTENDANCE AREA BOUNDARY

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas about attendance areas for Donald R. Getty School. We heard from some of you at our information meetings and from many more of you through our online survey. Please know your feedback helped us make our decisions.

APPROVED ATTENDANCE AREA

The Superintendent has approved the following attendance area for Donald R. Getty School:

  • Students living in the following neighbourhood are designated to Donald R. Getty School: Chappelle (West).
  • Donald R. Getty School will have a secondary attendance area for the Chappelle (East) neighbourhood. This means, once all students from the primary attendance area are enrolled at Donald R. Getty School, students in the secondary attendance area are given first priority to enrol if space is still available.
  • Donald R. Getty School will have an open attendance boundary, which means students living outside the attendance area can enrol, if there is room, through our random selection process.
  • Students in the Chappelle (East) neighbourhood remain designated to Duggan and D.S. MacKenzie schools.
  • In the future, if a school opens in the Chappelle East neighbourhood, students residing in Chappelle East who are attending Donald R. Getty School will be redirected to the new school in Chappelle East.
  • Yellow bus service will not be provided because all students designated to Donald R. Getty School live within the walk boundary.

For questions about yellow bus service, contact Student Transportation at 780-429-8585.

HOW WE MADE THE DECISION

We chose an attendance area that would allow as many students as possible to attend a school close to home, and we did our best to keep families and communities together. We were also careful to make sure the school doesn’t fill up too quickly while communities are still growing. This is a lesson we learned from opening other schools in new areas. Including the entire Chappelle neighbourhood could overwhelm the school as soon as the fifth year of operation.

MANAGING GROWTH

Students who live in the primary attendance area are guaranteed a place at the school. If the school has a secondary attendance area and there’s still space once students from the primary attendance area have registered, students living in the secondary attendance area are able to enrol. If the school still has space once students from both the primary and secondary attendance areas have enrolled, students from outside the attendance areas can register and will be selected through our random selection process.

The school will carefully manage enrolment to make sure there’s room for new students who move into the school’s primary attendance area, and we hope this will minimize the need to change attendance areas in the future.

For questions about the attendance area decision, contact the Planning department at 780-429-8539.
