DONALD R. GETTY (CHAPPELLE) K-9

GRADE LEVEL AND STUDENT CAPACITY

The new school in Chappelle (Heritage Valley) will accommodate:

  • Kindergarten to Grade 9
  • 900 students

SCHOOL NAME

DONALD R. GETTY

The new school in Chappelle will be named after Donald R. Getty, a former quarterback with the Edmonton Eskimos and MLA who was elected as Alberta’s 11th premier in 1985. Getty steered the province through a time of collapsing oil prices and worked to establish Alberta’s Heritage Savings Trust Fund, which produces income to support government departments such as health, education and infrastructure. The Board of Trustees approved this school name at a public board meeting on June 21, 2016. Learn more about Donald R. Getty

LOCATION

Heritage Valley is a collection of neighbourhoods in southwest Edmonton. Donald R. Getty School will be built in the west section of the Chappelle neighbourhood at the corner of Chappelle Green and Chappelle Way.

There is a lack of capacity for students in southwest Edmonton and this is only one of the schools planned for the area of Heritage Valley. Three of the school sites are in various stages of development:

ATTENDANCE AREA BOUNDARY OPTIONS

INFORMATION MEETING

In addition to the options listed below, we’ve heard that the community would like us to consider other attendance area options for Donald R. Getty School. We’ll share a new option, based on your feedback, at an upcoming information meeting.

Tuesday, September 27
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Robert MacAdams School2099 Blackmud Creek Drive SW

If you have any questions, please call Planning at 780-429-8539.

HOW WE DEVELOPED THE OPTIONS

When coming up with options, we tried to make sure the attendance areas:

  • allowed as many students as possible attend a school close to their home
  • would remain the same as communities continue to grow, so that the school is not over capacity soon after opening
  • have open boundaries, allowing students from outside the attendance areas to attend the new school if there is available space, using our random selection process

WHAT WE'VE HEARD SO FAR

We’re collecting your feedback and will use it to inform our decision in the fall. Here are some of the themes we’re noticing in the feedback we’ve received so far:

  • We’re hearing people would like the primary attendance area to include all of Chappelle, with communities to the north (Graydon Hill, Hays Ridge and Paisley) excluded or limited to secondary attendance area.
  • People are talking about the potential for increased traffic, as cars and busses drive north from Chappelle East to take students to Duggan and others head south from Graydon Hill, Hays Ridge and Paisley to bring students to the school in Chappelle.
  • Respondents have said they like that the proposed options will manage enrolment growth and make sure the school isn’t overcapacity just a few years after opening.

WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH YOUR FEEDBACK

We’ve heard that the community would like us to consider other attendance area options for Donald R. Getty School, so that’s what we’re doing. We’ll share a new option, based on your feedback, in the fall.
