Riverview Proposed Attendance Area Redesignation

GRAND ISLE, STILLWATER AND WHITE BIRCH PROPOSED ATTENDANCE AREA REDESIGNATION

We are considering the possibility of redesignating the Grand Isle, Stillwater and White Birch neighbourhoods for the 2018–19 school year.

REASONS FOR THE PROPOSED CHANGE

  • The Grand Isle, Stillwater and White Birch areas will be undergoing major development, beginning in spring 2018.
  • The redesignation would create much-needed space at Michael A. Kostek School, which is facing enrolment pressure. Michael A. Kostek School will not be able to accommodate students from these neighbourhoods as development progresses.
  • Our five-year projection data shows that enrolment at Michael A. Kostek will continue to increase steadily. The District has already added the maximum amount of portables at the school, and we aren’t able to add any more because of how the school site is laid out.
  • Ormsby School currently has room to accommodate elementary school students from these neighbourhoods; students would continue to be designated to S. Bruce Smith School for junior high.

CHOOSING TO REMAIN AT YOUR CURRENT SCHOOL

Once a student enrols at a school, they can continue to attend that school. This means students attending Michael A. Kostek School can choose to stay. Siblings of these students would also be able to attend, if families choose to stay at their current school.

TIMELINES

If the proposed redesignation is approved, the change would be in effect for the 2018-19 school year.

We'll make a final decision on the proposed redesignation in January, before pre-enrolment begins. We’ll share information with families once a decision is made.

YELLOW BUS SERVICE

If the redesignation is approved, Michael A. Kostek School would no longer be the designated school for the Grand Isle, Stillwater and White Birch neighbourhoods. Only eligible students who attend their designated school receive yellow bus service.
