The objective of the policy is to help First Nations, non-status, Métis and Inuit students be successful by shaping their education to better suit their needs. This approach includes having Aboriginal perspectives in core curriculum materials and advocating to have changes made to the Attendance Board to better serve the needs of Aboriginal students and families. The new policy also requires that the Board be provided with an annual report on all aspects of Aboriginal education.

The task force, made up of Trustees and central services staff, consulted with individuals and groups involved with the Aboriginal community regarding the development of the Aboriginal Education policy.
