News item: Increased student numbers in 2022-23

I want to welcome all of our students, staff and families to a new school year! This is an exciting time for all of us as we welcome back students to our schools and establish new routines and friendships.

You may have noticed that many of our school buildings feel a little busier than normal. For the first time in two years, we are happy to welcome back most of our students to face-to-face learning. We’re also happy to welcome so many new faces to Edmonton Public Schools.

We are seeing more students than we had originally anticipated. According to projections we completed in the spring, we anticipated just over 107,000 students across the city, which was already a 2.7 per cent increase from the 2021-22 school year. We’ve already met, and exceeded, those projections. This means more students through our doors and into our classrooms.

We anticipate continued fluctuations in enrolment throughout September. Our principals and school staff are working to support and welcome students into our school communities and build quality learning environments. For some schools, there might be decisions to reorganize some classes or grades. We appreciate your patience and understanding over the next few weeks while we settle into the school year.

If you have any questions about your particular circumstances, please reach out to your school principal.
