News item: New provincial curriculum in select K–6 subjects this school year

This fall, Kindergarten to Grade 6 students will learn new provincial curriculum in the following subjects and grades:

  • Science (K–3)
  • English Language Arts and Literature (Grades 4–6)
  • Mathematics (Grades 4–6)
  • French Immersion Language Arts and Literature (K–3)

New provincial curriculum is being developed and introduced in schools over a number of years. Our focus remains the same as we start the second year of implementation: to support student learning by preparing school staff.

How we’re preparing

Many K–6 teachers took part in professional learning related to the new curriculum last school year and over the summer. Opportunities for professional learning will continue to be offered through this school year. School staff also have access to updated teaching and learning resources to support the new curriculum.

More information

The Government of Alberta determines the new curriculum content and timelines for implementation. Families are encouraged to visit Alberta Education’s curriculum page to learn more about what is being implemented in the upcoming school year and in future years.

The full provincial curriculum and parent resources are available on Alberta Education’s New LearnAlberta site.
