News item: New anti-racism and equity action plan

We know racism still exists in our schools and communities. At Edmonton Public Schools, we are taking steps to create learning and working environments where everyone feels like they belong.

ANTI-RACISM AND EQUITY ACTION PLAN

Our Anti-racism and Equity plan for 2021–22 outlines how we plan to bring about positive change for students, staff and families.

This action plan is the start of a multi-year journey toward long-term systemic change.

HOW THE PLAN WAS CREATED

Over the last several months, we have listened—students, staff, families and community members have shared their lived experiences and perspectives through listening circles and group discussions.

Their voices help us understand what is important and where to begin.

THREE KEY ACTION AREAS

For the 2021–22 school year, we will be focusing on:

  • providing school staff with resources and training that support anti-racism, equity and diversity
  • reviewing our hiring practices, leadership development program and new teacher training program
  • developing a plan on how to collect and use extended student demographic data to gain a deeper understanding of students and their needs

View the Anti-racism and Equity Action Plan for 2021–22 (PDF) for details about each action.

Read a letter from Superintendent Darrel Robertson about why this work is important.

NEXT STEPS

In the coming weeks, we will share translated summaries of the action plan so more families are aware of our efforts towards anti-racism and equity. We’ll also provide updates about our progress in each of the key areas.
