News item: We're celebrating Pride Week

It’s Pride Week from June 3 to 7 at Edmonton Public Schools.

At the May 28 public board meeting, our Board of Trustees voted unanimously to declare the first week of June as Pride Week each year in the District.

“I think this is timely and it is important and it’s exciting,” Board Chair Michelle Draper said during the meeting.

SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOLS

Recognizing Pride Week as a District is a great way for Edmonton Public Schools to support the celebrations that already take place in many schools, said board Vice-Chair Bridget Stirling, who introduced the idea of a District Pride Week.

“In future years, we’ll probably see this grow, and I look forward to that happening,” said Stirling.

In past years, more than 200 Edmonton Public Schools students and staff participated in the Pride Parade, Stirling noted. After this year’s Pride Parade was cancelled, students and staff around the District started talking about other opportunities to mark Pride Month in June, she said.

SCHOOLS ARE INVITED TO CELEBRATE

The District is supporting schools that choose to participate in Pride Week with ideas and resources. Schools are deciding whether to hold events and what those will look like. For example, Victoria School students are creating a sidewalk chalk rainbow mural to celebrate.
