Sports Alternative

Program Description

Sports Alternative programming enables student athletes to participate in rigorous sports training routines while remaining on track with their academic goals.

Goals

  • Develop academic skills with a flexible schedule that  allows for sport-specific training

Benefits

  • Improved technique and enhanced knowledge of the chosen sport or recreational activity
  • Preparation for advanced training or competition
  • Improved time management and organizational skills

Program delivery

  • Academic classes scheduled for part of the day or week with sports training scheduled for the remainder of the day or week
  • Athletic and sport training by certified coaches
  • Access to on-site and community training facilities
  • Shadow Days to provide prospective students with a first-hand experience in the program

The Division provides academic instruction and partner organizations provide sports training at a cost to parents. Current partnerships with Vimy Ridge Academy and Donnan schools include:

Fees

Students enrolled in Sports Alternative pay additional fees to cover extra costs such as equipment, transportation and facility rentals. Contact a school offering Sports Alternative for more information.

Eligibility

To be eligible, students must:

  • be in Grades 3 - 12
  • have sports experience, or be involved in sports training or competitions.

Alberta curriculum

All Edmonton Public Schools programming is based on curriculum determined by Alberta Education and Childcare. Students enrolled in Sports Alternative will receive the same high-quality education offered in all of our programs.

Transportation

  • Grade 3 to Grade 6 - Some yellow busing options are available.
  • Grade 7 to 12 - Edmonton Transit is the preferred method of transportation.
